個人看法與心得:
This book deals largely with limitations of the medical
profession in many aspects. I could almost feel the guilt and
helplessness whilst reading through the scary scenarios
Gawande depicted in the chapters. The book starts off intensely,
introducing how a young surgical resident who never had any
experience of inserting a CVC line tried his best for the first
time. This reminds me vividly of MY first attempt in placing a
CVC line. I panicked and got confused once I put on the green
aseptic gown, forgetting to prepare many items in advance, and
couldn’t remember all the steps. Worst of all, I failed in the
procedure, and a senior resident had to step in and do the rest
of the work. The patient was in agony and had to endure my
clumsiness knowingly or not. Similar conditions must have
happened to all doctors at their first attempts performing any
medical procedures. We may be ashamed of but can never deny
making mistakes during our career. “In the medicine, we have
long faced a conflict between the imperative to give patients
the best possible care and the need to provide novices with
experience.” As a patient, one naturally wants the “best doctor”
to treat him, but the best can only get there by practicing,
meaning that at some point one is going to receive imperfect
medical practice.
