History
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was established in December of 1977. The first director of the department was Dr. Tseng, Chan-Chuan. She became our director after the completion of her full rehabilitation resident training program at National Taiwan University. Dr. Wong, Alice May-Kuen (who is now the superintendent of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital at Taoyuan Branch) became the second director of our department from 1987 to 1994. At that time, the department only had two attending physicians and two resident doctors. The first two rehabilitation medicine resident doctors were Dr. Tang, Simon FT (who is now the program director and professor of rehabilitation medicine at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital), and Dr. Liang, Chiu-Pin. Over the years, the department has recruited more resident doctors and has successfully trained these doctors to become board certified physiatrists.

Rapid expansion of the department and booming of rehabilitation medicine can be seen from 1994 onwards when Dr. Tang, Simon FT became the director. The services provided by the department not only restricted to conventional rehabilitation treatments, but further expanded to neurorehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, motor control and limb restorative rehabilitation, prosthetic and orthotic prescription, cardiac rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, and speech therapy rehabilitation services. Our department purchased the most advanced gait analysis system in which disease causing deviated gait pattern can be clearly analyzed. Treatment strategies such as the implementation of insoles, and botulinum toxin injections can be given to assist the patients in improving their gait pattern and posture.

In June 6th of 2003, our department had a new director, Dr. Chou, Jim SW. Dr. Chou received his PhD training in Sports Medicine in the University of Texas. He incorporated the most up to date knowledge of sports medicine into the department and set up a well-known physical fitness center in the hospital. The center has played an essential role in helping professional and non-professional athletes to reach the primes in their athletic careers. Dr. Chou is also the team physician of the Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) Olympic team for many years.
