Overview
Renal
failure is the seventh of the top ten causes
of death in Taiwan. The number of people
with chronic renal failure who require
long-term dialysis has reached 30000. The
possible reasons for the high incidence and
prevalence of dialysis patients in Taiwan
include: an increase in diabetic patients
and elderly population, increased survival
in dialysis patients, use of nephrotoxic
agents (ie. NSAIDS) and Chinese herb
nephropathy. Infection associated
nephropathy such as leptospirosis is also an
important and often neglected cause of acute
and chronic renal failure in Taiwan.
