Research at Chang Gung is managed by the Division of Research and Development of the Central
Administration, with funding from national agencies including National Science Council, National
Health Research Institute, and Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan, ROC, and from
intramural funding through the Chang Gung Medical Foundation. Each of the five hospital branches
of Chang Gung Health Systems (Linkou,Taipei, Taoyuan, Kaoshiung, Keelung, Chiayi and Yunlin)
maintains an Office of Research and Development (ORD), respectively, on its campus, the mission
of which is to promote, facilitate and oversee both basic and clinical research. ORD recommends
strategies and plans intramural (within Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chang Gung University),
national and international collaborative research, while monitoring their execution by calling
for intramural proposals, conducting reviews, execute follow-ups and conduct periodic
evaluations and recommendations for institutional support. It serves also as a clearing station
for proposals, aiming for national and international competition and/or collaborations.
ORD at Chang Gung supports research initiatives originated by individual principal investigators
or by a team in the form of a program project. Some program projects have evolved into Research
Centers, which are recognized for present or potential scientific and/or clinical impact of
significance. Many aspects of current research at Chang Gung are supported by Core Laboratories.
A Biobank has been established to accommodate tissues and fluid specimen from donors for
research use. A Center designated for the support of Clinical Trial is also in full operation.
ORD is supported by animal care and use committee, as well as human experiment ethics committees
and intellectual property office.
ORD at the CGMH, Linkou oversees ten major Research Centers, respectively for Kidney Research
Center, Molecular Infectious Disease Research Center, Neuroscience Research Center, Center for
Advanced Molecular Imaging and Translation, Gynecologic Cancer Research Center, Liver Research
Center , Craniofacial Research Center, Center for Composite Tissue Allotransplantation, Center
for Tissue Engineering, Bone and Joint Research Center
. Additional Research Centers include Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Regenerative Medicine/ Stem
Cell, Transplantation, Reproductive Physiology, Microsurgery, Medical Physics (Proton), Child
Health, Herbal Medicine, Immunology, and Human Genetics. The Core Laboratories consists of those
for Microscopy, Clinical Proteomics, Genomic Medicine, DNA Sequencing, Metabolomics and
Resources for Clinical Research.
Principal investigators, with training as M.D., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.or its equivalents, are
derived from various clinical departments and joined by full time postdoctoral fellow,
technicians and staffs in their research. Some are accorded the fellowship of Physician
Scientist, for whom ORD serves to nominate and appoint, with provisions for dedicated time for
research, in lieu of clinical duties.
The motto for Research at Chang Gung, as set by Mr. Yung-Ching Wang , the founder of Chang Gung
Health Systems, is: “To have the ability to keep abreast of the advent in medical science and
make significant contribution to its advances and application.”
