第一名 The Lazarus Case: Life-and-Death
Issues in Neonatal Intensive Care

In this book, the author John D. Lantos, who is a
pediatrician and medical ethicist, describes a fictional
malpractice case which is similar to several actual malpractice
cases in which he has testified as an expert witness in court.
In Lantos's model case, a pregnant woman goes into
premature labor at 24 weeks of gestation. The baby is delivered
emergently via NSD (vaginal delivery) and weighs only 600
grams at birth. After birth, the baby is found to be pulseless
with no spontaneous breathing. According to routine, the baby
is first intubated, and resuscitative efforts are initiated.
However, after 10 minutes of resuscitation, the baby is
unresponsive to medical efforts. Believing that further
intervention would be futile, the doctor then decides to stop
resuscitation of the tiny premature infant who seems to be past
reasonable care. The baby is put into the mother’s arms,
allowing her to hold the child for a few last moments before the
