書名; 九死一生，高銘和聖母峰歷險記

新聞傳來一個消息：首位登上聖母峰(1953年)紐西蘭籍的希拉瑞爵士於今年1月11日去世了！對大多數的人而言，攀登聖母峰是遙不可及的夢想，即使是在科技發達、裝備先進的現在，要登上海拔8,848公尺的高山，仍不是件簡單的事！在1996年以前，台灣分別於1993,1994及1995年三次走西藏路線登上聖母峰，而本書作者高銘和先生是於1996年率領遠征隊，循尼泊爾方向，要實現他們的夢想。

 然而夢想尚未實現，遠征隊卻已損兵折將！在1995年6月於北美第一高峰麥肯尼峰(標高6,194公尺)進行訓練時，遇到了大風雪，造成一人死亡、兩人凍傷！1996年3月終於排除萬難出發了，到了加德滿都，再搭機到攀登聖母峰的起點盧克拉(海拔2,700公尺)，開始作高度適應，一步步向基地營前進。基地營位於海拔5,340公尺，之後到聖母峰頂尚有第一營(6,000公尺)、第二營(6,300公尺)、第三營(7,300公尺)及第四營(7,950公尺)，而當時準備登頂的還有其他國家共12支登山隊，其中不乏赫赫有名的登山家。 

遠征隊由高銘和先生及陳玉男先生於5月6日率先由基地營出發，然而陳先生在第四營失足滑落後來喪生，高先生只有自己帶著三名雪巴攻頂。5月10日凌晨12:30開始攻頂，在已經爬了十三個鐘頭、到達峰頂前約100公尺，雪巴警告將有暴風雪，要高先生趕緊下撤，但高先生背負著眾人的期許，又眼見他國的登山好手正一一往峰頂前進，不願就此放棄仍咬牙繼續攀頂。在下午三點十五分時，終於登頂，尚不及好好欣賞峰頂的絕景，因氣候惡劣只得匆匆下山。途中風雪增大，天色已黑，高先生漸漸與雪巴們拉開距離，最後竟然自己一人被困在8,400公尺處，沒有氧氣筒、食物、帳篷及睡袋，獨自在冰峰上熬過風雪交加的一夜！隔日，雪巴丹增揹著氧氣筒上山，費盡千辛萬苦將已奄奄一息的他揹到第四營才獲救，原來這場暴風雪造成了聖母峰歷年來最大的山難，其他各國的登山好手共八人喪生！ 

高先生雖然大難不死，但也付出慘痛的代價，在阿拉斯加的醫院診斷後，確定手指、腳趾骨頭已凍傷壞死，需全部切除，鼻子也要挖掉！手術是回臺灣進行的，而且就是本院！6月3日，高先生住進林口長庚醫院，在整形外科進行手術，一年內開了十五次刀，其苦痛非與外人道，更遑論還需進行漫長的復健。然而他憑著樂天知命的性格，接受了自己已成傷殘的事實，兩年後，又重回群山的懷抱，而且在十年後的今天，他要再次率隊重返聖母峰！ 

看完這本書，不免心想，為了一登世界最高峰，換來這樣的結果是否值得呢？登頂只是剎那，身上的傷殘卻是永遠的，但是如果放棄，將永遠不會知道峰頂上究竟是如何的風景，只是在記憶中徒留遺憾！冒險家的行徑是瘋狂的，但就如作者所言，登山可以讓他發現自我、實現自我，這不也是芸芸眾生所追求的嗎？
