The Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital was established in 1986. Since its foundation, the institution was steered in achieving utmost excellence in every field of medical specialty. The Department of Surgery, under the guidance of its exemplary leaders, has pioneered several momentous advances and researches which were marked and remained an eminent landmark in the field of surgery. In 1984, Professor Chao Long Chen performed the first successful liver transplantation in Asia. Professor Chen, who is known for his brilliance and diligence, has successfully constituted the Chang Gung liver transplantation program which is now considered to be one of the finest programs around the world. Through the years, it has provided invaluable services among hundreds of people locally and across the globe. Professor Fong Fu Chao, establishing general surgical endocrine team, is intensely immersed in producing valuable researches concerning all aspects of parathyroid hormone functions. Such studies have mounted enormous understanding and hastened further studies in this field. Dr. Wang, the superintendent emeritus of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital at Kaohsiung, Taiwan first in Asia successfully conducted the clinical trials of Extracorporeal Shockwave Technology (ESWT) in the treatment of non-unions of long bone fracture and overuse sports related tendinopathies of the shoulder, elbow, knee and heel in August 1999. He was among the first one in Taiwan to use this modality in treating these diseases. The treatments were marked with outstanding success; and, hence became an essential instrument in the management of these patients. In 1998, Professor Chuang established the post graduate program, PhD. and master program, in Chang Gung medical College which was envisioned in providing the country of future leaders well equipped with the expertise and knowledge in surgery, aspiring to serve its people and driving the nation to progress. In the recent years, the Department of Surgery, Kaohsiung medical center was recognized locally and internationally as a center of excellence for training in both clinical and research studies. In 2005, the institution was given the recognition of “Symbol of National Quality”. Three years later, it was distinguished as one of Henri Bismuth’s training center for hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in Asia. The liver transplantation program similarly has received the recognition as one of the best program internationally. For these reasons the institution was flocked by innumerable number of surgeons throughout the world seeking further training in different surgical specialty. Professor Chen as well as other members of the surgical staff were, in numerous occasions, had been invited as speakers and actively participated in several international congresses. Recently, many of the surgical staffs were granted with international guest scholarship from the American College of surgeons. Such honors feature the perseverance of the department in seeking and rendering the highest standard of surgical care. In years to come, the department of surgery will continue its goal of further enhancing its academic excellence and become a world leader in all aspect of surgical discipline. The department further aims of nurturing surgical specialist, equipped with the skills, knowledge and virtuosity, endeavored in serving its country and people from different nations. |
