Research Summary
The etiology causing asthma is complex with genetic and environmental factors. Many risk factors of asthma have been characterized based on epidemiological association studies. The innate mucosal immune system, represented by epithelial and other mucosal cells and their products, is able to recognize the conserved pathogenic patterns on microbes through pattern recognition receptors such as Toll-like receptors, CD14 and others. Interaction between the mucosal microbiota and immune cells is important in the development of the immune system. The microbiota mediates mechanisms of immunological tolerance and is essential in regulating mucosal inflammation. Modifications in microbiota patterns during infancy could alter the subsequent host immune responses, and might be essential in preventing mucosal inflammation. Microbiota in airway is hypothesized to play an important role in the development of allergic airway diseases. The central theme of my study is to understand the impact of alterations in airway microbiota patterns on the development of asthma.
