The
Chang
Gung Medical Center Department of Psychiatry was founded in 1978 by
Dr.
Simon Lee, who had worked as a staff psychiatrist in United States
for 5 years. After 30 years, it has become one of the best
academic psychiatric departments in
TAIWAN.
Currently, the Department
has three major components:
1.
Section of General Psychiatry,
2.
Section of Rehabilitation and Community Psychiatry, and
3.
Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
There are also two centers in
the Department:
1.
Center for Suicide Prevention, and
2.
Psychotherapy and Counseling Center
It is an interdisciplinary behavioral
sciences department, which serves as a teaching, research and medical service
center of mental health.
We have outstanding
staffs whose interests and expertise range from biological to sociocultural
psychiatry. Our primary missions include clinical care, teaching
and research.
Clinical
Services
The clinical programs serve
a large and diverse population. We are also concerned with family, and
other social facts affecting mental health, and with the moral issues that
arise in the practice of modern medicine.
The Department has three
outpatient centers (at Taipei branch, Linko, and Taoyuam branch), an acute
inpatient unit with 30 beds, a day care center for adult psychotic patients
and another day care center for children with autism.
In the Taoyuan branch, we
also have a long stay ward with 100 beds.
Each month, we provide over
9,000 outpatient visits, 100 emergency room consultations, and 200 consultations
for medical / surgical inpatients of the hospital.
Major clinical
programs address a broad range of psychiatric illnesses, including:
anxiety disorders , depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, psychosomatic
disorders, schizophrenia, sleep disorders, autism, attention deficit disorder,
Alzheimer's disease and other geriatric or child psychiatric disorders.
Our multidisciplinary team
responds to each patient with a commitment to individualized treatment
that may include pharmacotherapy, individual psychotherapy, couple therapy,
group therapy, occupational therapy, and other biological treatments (e.g.,
electro-convulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain
stimulation).
Education
and Training
As a major teaching facility
of
Chang Gung University
School of Medicine, we maintain a variety of research programs in behavioral
sciences and psychiatry. Our training
program is one of the best thought out and innovative in the country.
The Department is also involved
in teaching programs in clinical psychology, occupational therapy, social
work, medical ethics and other disciplines.
The Department has three
accredited training programs: general psychiatry residency, child psychiatry
fellowship and geriatric psychiatry fellowship (part of gerontology fellowship
training program of National Health Research Institute).
In addition, the Department
provides several research fellowship programs. Among them, sleep
medicine fellowship and consultation psychiatry fellowship are the leading
programs in Taiwan, and the women's mental health program has its
international reputation.
The Psychology Division has
a master and doctorial internship program. Social work and Occupational
Therapy internships receive undergraduate, and master students . We have
always had a strong interest in education, and will continue to transmit
the essentials of its discipline to medical students, residents and other
mental health professionals.
Researches
The principal
research groups in the Department are concerned with depressive disorders,
headache, attention deficit disorder, old age psychiatry, women's mental
health, men's mental health, sleep medicine, neuropsychiatry (brain stimulation
and neuro imaging).
Investigators in the Department
are actively involved in both clinical and basic research studies in all
these areas of investigation. We also have several excellent research

of academic excellence. We provide most-up-to-date treatments for
mental disorders, and always maintain a humanistic orientation toward patient
care. The goal of the education programs is to develop highly competent
mental health workers and leaders.
Thanks to our members, we
have achieved a national reputation. It is expected that the Department
