Improving patient safety with statistical correlation
Samuel F. HohmannMichelle M. Hoppes

New regulations and standards have increased the demands on health care facilities to show proof of data collection and analysis in order to improve patient safety and quality of care. One new requirement are the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO)'s staffing effectiveness standards, which require hospitals to collect, analyze, measure, and utilize data to determine how staffing affects patient outcomes. Like many standards, the staffing effectiveness standards are particularly challenging because they are not prescriptive; that is, it's up to you to define your process.
