Standard Deviation Hypo
Message posted by Jeff (via 152.163.205.64) on April 28, 2001 at 10:02 PM (ET)

My professor in law school gave the following hypo: out of 80 male atty's 24 were promoted; out of 20 female atty's 4 were promoted. Because the SD is 5.1 (how?) we can be nearly 95% certain that the difference in promotions (20) was due to gender (i.e. 2 SDs suggest it would be within 20.4). How is it possible to get a "mean" from promoted/not promoted? How is it possible to get the SD from that binary mean?
