what is the difference between correlation and intercorrelation? Can you use the term intercorrelation when you are comparing scales of 2 different assessment instruments?

You may be referring to "inter-rater reliability". It is a technique where you take the score of the first half of a test and the second half of a test and see if there is a high positive correlation. High positive correlation (high positive R) is an indication that the test doesn't have any major (glaring) internal problems with measuring what is covered on the test.

Correlation is defined as the relationship between two quantities - of how variation in one effects variation in the other.
Comparing scales is a related but somewhat different problem. We can say that two scales are equivalent such as pounds and grams, etc. or we can say that scales are correlated - possibly in a conditional way, such as weight and height for a human being or for a horse, etc.
I am not sure that inter-correlation is well defined. The internal correlation of parts of a data stream with each other may be one of the definitiions of inter-correlation.
