which statistical test can i use
to test for correlation
between two continuous variables (eg age and test score)

There are transformation that allow you to use a t-test. You can also use tables.

Would a Pearson correlation not be appropriate.

*First at all the p-value that most of the package show for each coefficient must be smaller that 0.05 for 95% confidence, or check for signifficance and conficence interval for the slope.
* You can check for signifficance of the sample correlation coefficient.
