The "sample space" is simply the collection of all of the possible outcomes, i.e., 4 heads, 3 heads and one tail, 2 heads and 2 tails, 1 head and 3 tails, and 4 tails. The term "sample space" is used interchangeably with the terms "population" or "universe"; the large groups from which smaller samples may be taken.

The sample space can also be defined as the set of sixteen quadruples; (H,H,H,H) ,(H,H,H,T), ..., (T,T,T,T).
