Center of Population
Message posted by Mickey Crawford on February 2, 2000 at 12:00 AM (ET)

The Statistical Abstract of the United States publishes the "Center of Population" for the US. Is there a formula or procedure available for finding that geographic center for a state.

yes, this is called a centroid.
superimpose a grid over the
state map. then write down
the population of each square
in the grid. then you find
the center of population with
respect to the x-axis (a line
dividing the population in two)
by looking at cumulative sums
line by line. do the same with
respect to the y-axis. then
the intersection of those
lines is the center of
population.

clear?

I BELIEVE HE ASKS ABOUT DETERMINING THE GEOGRAPHIC CENTER AS OPPOSED TO THE POPULATION CENTER OF A STATE-AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT I'D LIKE TO FIND OUT. THANKS-RAY BROWN-SEATTLE
