What is Multivariate Statistical Analysis and how & when does one apply this procedure?

Multivariate statistical analysis is all of statistics when we are dealing with more than one dimension. I.Q. is an example of multivariate statistical analysis where various measurements are combined to yield a number which some claim measures something that they call 'intelligence' .
