standard error/standard deviation

Ok, this maybe a daft question, but could someone clarify for me the difference between standard deviation and standard error please.

The standard error is the standard deviation of the estimator of a parameter. For example, if you estimate the population mean by the sample mean, xbar, the standard error of xbar is sigma/sqrt(N), where sigma is the standard devaition of a single obseervation and N is the sample size.
