finding value of beta
Message posted by Tom on October 20, 1999 at 12:00 AM (ET)

how do you calculate the numerical value of "beta"?
I know it is related to the sample size, and alpha, and probability of type I or II error, but i don't know how to get the actual value.

Beta is the probability of Type II error just as alpha is the probability of Type I error.

Beta is the probability of accepting the null hypothesis when the alternative is really true (Type II error). So you have to specify parameters for the alternative first. Then you ask what the probability of being in the "acceptance" region is when the alternative is true.

Do you have a particular Ho and H1 you are looking at?
