do you know of any freeware programs available for t-tests, anova's and the like??

If you have Microsoft Excel, you may not need other software. Select "Data Analysis" from the "Tools" menu, and you will see several variations of ANOVA & t-tests, z-test, F-test, and may other useful statistical functions. If you don't see it in the Tools menu, you may just need to activate the add-in package. Click "Tools" then "Add-Ins" and check the box for "Analysis ToolPak." There is also t-test in the "Paste Function" menu.
