Is anyone able to tell me when structural equation modeling is necessary? I have five dependent variables and one independent. Thanks

You seem to be talking about regression or curve fitting. Is structural equations the some as non-linear regression ? In any case the 'form' of the curve being fitted is not a 'statistics' question.

Your question probably requires a more thorough answer than is possible on this message board. Check your library for Hair, JF et al. Multivariate data analysis. 4th Ed. Prentice Hall, 1995, for a very readable discussion of structural equation modeling.
