Why The Gold Standard?

Im so glad I found out about this boardsince I have pondered for help and havent gotten a response. Someone help!

Question:
The table below gives the results for a diabetes sceening.
The cutoff level for blood glucose is 160mg/dl as a poasitive for diabetes.

Diabetes Non Diabetes Total
+ 50 30 80
- 200 9720 9920
250 9750 10,000
Now lower the cutoff level to 140 mg/dl. 100 of 200 people who then tested positive were among the 9,750 people found by the Gold Standard test NOt to have diabetes.

What 'gold standard' are we talking about? Is this medical jargon?
