Spearman's rank correlation coefficient is used when Pearson's correlation coefficient does not apply. Pearson's coefficient assumes bivariate normality and measures linear correlation, while Pearson's coefficient only assumes monotone association between the two variables for which a correlation cokefficient is being calculated.
