what exactly is the "z" factor and how does it help us understand standard deviation? P.S., I need to know this today (I have a large exam tomorrow)! THANKS

The ratio Z as the difference between the value and the mean divided by the SD.

So Z gives the number of SD units that the value is from the mean.

Z = ( X - AVG) / SD or SD= (X - AVG)/Z

In order to use tables any normal distribution has to be transformed to a Z or standard normal distribution with mean 0 and SD=1 .
