finding a standard deviation

if i wanted to find the standard deviation of peoples grades and i was using excel what numerical values would i use the actual grades..ie..94,93,92 or the point vaules for the grades..ie..1..2..3..
i used the grades and came out with the number 12.90890 is this a possible answer?

The number is reasonable - but why do you need a standard deviation and what do you think it means?
