Don't laugh too hard but..."t" in t-test?

If you will indulge a question from someone who knows nothing about statistics, what, if anything, does the "t" in t-test stand for?

That is a very good question! I'm not laughing because I was just asked that in a statistics class and am trying to find the answer too.

The t-test is a statistical test that assumes that you have a normally distributed random variable and a small sample. Small usually means less than 30. A test as to whether men a taller than women based or a random sample of 10, would probably be done using a t-test.
