Hypothesis test
Message posted by m.d. (via 140.209.38.28) on December 11, 2001 at 6:33 PM (ET)

If anyone could give me any idea how to do this (anything!!) I would be SO appreciative. Thank you in advance!

The US Pharmacopeia specifications for a certain drug call for an average therapeutically effective period of at least 24 hours. The standard deviation is known to be 2.3 hours. A shipment of this drug will be accepted or rejected on the basis of a simple random sample of 36 items drawn from the shipment. Set up a complete hypth. test if the allowable type I error is 2.5%. Then, indicate the decision which would be reached if the sample had a mean period of effectiveness of 22.7 hours.

You have a hypothesis test for the mean of a single sample with a one-sided alternative where sigma is known. Alpha is given to be 0.025.

You should be able to find the procedure (z-test) in any college level text in the chapter on 'Hypothesis Tests for Single Samples'.
