I have been given data on 45 employees regarding their performance before and after a training programme. How do I check whether the efficiency of the workers has improved or not?and whether such improvement can be attributed to training?

You have "paired" data. YOu want to test if the difference between before and after is significant. You should be able to find a "paired t-test" in most statistics books.
