The level of significance is another name for p-value or critical level. It is calculated from on the data and gives you the probability of obtaining such an outcome from your data if the null hypothesis were true.

Loosely speaking, it measures the empirical evidence in your data that the null hypothesis is not true. A small p-value of less than 0.05, say, is considered to be statistically significant. A high or moderate p-value is not statistically significant.
