Message posted by Pat (via 152.163.207.51) on July 11, 2001 at 9:25 AM (ET)

A researcher uses a chi-sqare test to investigate buying strategies among people purchasing DVD players. He wants to determine who buys the four different brands. The null hypothesis for this research would be:
a) in the population of DVD player buyers, one brand will be preferred over the other three brands.

b) that there are real differences in the population redarding CD player preferences.

c) that 1/4 of the sample will prefer each brand.

d) that 1/4 of the population will prefer each brand.

This is multiple choice question. Please help and pick correct answer. THANKS

The null hypothesis is the hypothesis of "no difference". In this case, that the DVD players are purchased with equal frequency.

If the researcher polled/interviewed EVERYONE that purchased a DVD, then the Null Hyp. would be D. If he polled a sample, his Null would be C. with the hope that the sample represented the population. (It should, or else there's no real point in doing the study).

The null hypothesis refers to a statement about the relationship among unknown parameters. So the answer is (d).
