Highlights


      The Department of Internal Medicine at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital is a renowned leader in patient care, medical research, and education at the local and international level. We provide a comprehensive program of clinical services encompassing general internal medicine and all the subspecialties, extending from primary to tertiary care. Our commitment to excellence in patient care is evidenced by the National Biotechnology and Medical Care Quality Award and the Symbol of National Quality Award.

      We are one of the few major medical centers in southern Taiwan. The Department of Internal Medicine is consisted of 138 attending physicians and 71 residents. Together with the nursing and ancillary staff, we serve over half a million patients each year in the outpatient clinic, and nearly 75,000 patients each year in the inpatient and intensive care units.

      We provide clinical and consultation services in General Internal Medicine and various medical subspecialties, including Cardiology, Pulmonary and Critical Care, Hepato-Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Hematology and Oncology, Rheumatology, and Infectious Diseases. General Internal Medicine Division is the major national medical education site where the medical students and residents learn professionalism and technical skills from our dedicated clinical instructors. Each medical subspecialty division is leader in its own field of expertise both at the local and national level. Our Division of Cardiology is internationally famed for its cardiac catheterization team, the first one in southern Taiwan since 1986. No other hospital in Taiwan is as committed as we do in providing treatment for acute coronary syndrome 24-hour a day around the clock. We have performed heart catheterization examination and percutaneous coronary intervention annually for over 1,800 and 900 times, respectively. Our Pulmonary and Critical Care Division offers extensive services in diagnosing and treating lung diseases and sleep disorders. Hepato-Gastroenterology Division is most famous world-wide for comprehensive treatment of viral hepatitis, liver tumors, and endoscopic management of gastrointestinal motility problems. The Division of Nephrology cares for the largest dialysis center in southern Taiwan, providing maintenance and emergent renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease or acute kidney injury. The Division of Endocrinology provides the most comprehensive care for patients with diabetes mellitus, thyroid and other endocrine and metabolic diseases. Our Hematology and Oncology Division is the key to multi-disciplinary team approach in comprehensive care for patients with complex malignant and blood disorders. Our Infectious Disease Division supervises the infection control in the hospital and also is a major site of regional infection control in southern Taiwan. The Rheumatology and Immunology Division is known for its strength in the treatment of gout, and autoimmune disorders.

      In addition to providing clinical services to our patients, the staffs in Department of Internal Medicine also conduct high-impact clinical and basic biomedical research. Our Core Laboratory of Internal Medicine has contributed significantly in areas such as:
Endothelial cells and platelets in cardiovascular diseases.
Cytokines and adhesion molecules in coronary artery diseases.
Genetic factors in thyroid diseases.
Molecular aspects of diabetes mellitus.
Gout and hyperuricemia.
Molecular epidemiology research of viral hepatitis.
Genetic modulation in liver tumors.
Physiologic and pathologic roles of Calcium and Ion channel in kidney.
Mitochondrial biogenesis in chronic kidney disease.
Diaphragmatic injury and acute lung injury in sepsis and mechanical ventilation.
Molecular mechanisms in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.
Viral contributions in autoimmune diseases.

      As the largest medical department in one of the few major medical centers in southern Taiwan, we are dedicated to providing the best state-of-the-art medical care to our patients.
