Introduction to the
Department of Child Psychiatry


I) The Beginning and Development

The department of child psychiatry in Chang-Gung Children's Hospital was established in April1993. Dr. Cheng Shen started the department with out- patient clinic at Lin Ko Medical Center.

As the department progressed, the day care center was established on July 1994, providing comprehensive and total care for autistic children. Dr. Yu-yu Wu became the second chief of department then.

Several doctors, including the present chief of the department, Dr. Hsueh-Ling Chang joined the department in the following years. At present, there are 5 full-time attending child psychiatrists, 1 fellow child psychiatrist, 6 clinical psychologists, 1 occupational therapist and 1 social worker in the department.
II) The treatment model in the department:
  At present, the Day Care Center focused on the rehabilitation of autism children. Our out-patient clinic, located on the basement floor of Chang-Gung Children's Hospital, provides several services:
  • Pharmacological treatment
  • Individual and group therapy
  • School and community services
  • Resident treatment program
  • Consultation

IV) Day care center :
Treatment program
Focusing on Autism children:

  • Individual treatment: to stimulate the development of motor function, communication ability and social concept, eliminate unwanted or inappropriate behavior
  • Activity treatment: to facilitate interpersonal interaction and ability to imitate
  • Group therapy: to learn social norm and group interaction
  • Personal care training
  • Family and school training: to provide corrective treatment for adjusting to school life
  • Outdoor activity: to help children generalized their adaptation ability and adjustment
Focusing on family members:
  • Counseling for correct concept and knowledge about autism
  • Supportive group for parents
  • Educational counseling
  • Finding of new Resources for parents and family
  • Provide clinical information and data for kindergarten
Future aspects:

  • To establish a comprehensive day care center for DD children
